The Range Rover Evoque is one of the most desirable new or used SUVs on sale in Britain. Those looking to buy or lease a new Evoque are spoilt for choice, while used car buyers have an even broader array of models, trims and specifications to pick from. 

A luxurious alternative to a BMW X1, Audi Q3 or Volvo XC40, the entry-level Range Rover carries all the class and premium appeal of its larger, more expensive siblings. The Evoque looks desirable and feels a cut above to travel in. 

It’s been a model in great demand right from the launch of the first-generation version in 2011. Styling taken straight from the catwalk made it a Range Rover like no other: the firm’s smallest and most accessible model, but still a genuine luxury product. 

The first Range Rover Evoque came as a three-door or five-door SUV, with the latter easily selling the best; it’s the model you’ll see most of on the used market. There was also a rare Evoque Convertible. 

Land Rover facelifted the Range Rover Evoque in 2013, and updated the engines over the years. Diesels dominated sales of the original model, as they offered fuel economy never before seen in a Range Rover. Most will have four-wheel drive, giving amazing off-road ability, but even front-wheel-drive versions are pretty capable (and better on fuel). 

The current Range Rover Evoque was introduced in 2019. Now purely available with five doors, it’s even more of a class act, with sophisticated lines and a top-quality interior. The arrival of a plug-in hybrid version, the P300e, has helped future-proof the range, although regular petrol and diesel versions still sell best – for now, at least.

The previous Range Rover Evoque was originally offered as a sporty three-door SUV alongside the more family-friendly five-door version. These cars are rare as buyers preferred the extra practicality – which is why the current model is only sold in five-door guise. Clever retractable door handles mean it still has a smooth, uncluttered look, though. 

Land Rover previously offered a soft-top convertible version of the Evoque, but this model variant hasn’t (yet) been repeated for the latest car. 

Engine choice is broad. Diesel once dominated the line-up, but these days you’ll find a greater number of petrol versions, including a swift 300PS range-topper. As mentioned, this is even now available as a plug-in hybrid, which gives the best official fuel economy of any Evoque, along with the fastest acceleration. 

All Evoques apart from the 2WD diesel come with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and most models have all-wheel drive as well. The entry-level diesel engine uses front-wheel drive in the interests of fuel-efficiency, and offering a manual gearbox helps keep the lead-in price competitive. Few buyers go for this model, though – and we’d urge you to choose an automatic ’box. 

• Range Rover Evoque P200 petrol: The entry-level Range Rover Evoque has a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine, built at the marque’s giant factory in Wolverhampton. It produces 200PS: good for 0-62mph in 8.6 seconds. It averages 31.4mpg, while CO2 emissions start from a steep 202g/km. 

• Range Rover Evoque P250 petrol: The P250 ups the power of the 2.0-litre turbo engine, cutting the 0-62mph time to 7.6 seconds. Fuel economy doesn’t suffer, with the same claimed 31.4mpg, although its faster acceleration makes it more expensive to insure (from group 35, instead of group 31). 

• Range Rover Evoque P300 petrol: The P300 is even quicker, with 0-62mph taking 6.8 seconds. It still manages to average over 30mpg, and boasts a German autobahn-friendly 150mph top speed. 

• Range Rover Evoque P300e plug-in hybrid petrol: Unlike other Evoque models, the P300e plug-in hybrid uses a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine. This is combined with an electric motor for total system power of 309PS, giving 0-62mph in 6.4 seconds. A 15kWh battery gives an electric range of up to 39 miles, and is behind CO2 emissions from just 32g/km. Crucially, that gives company car drivers a 12 percent BIK tax bill, instead of 37 percent. 

• Range Rover Evoque D165 diesel: The entry-level 2.0-litre diesel does 0-62mph in 10.1 seconds in 2WD manual guise, or 9.8 seconds as an AWD auto. While the 2WD Evoque has average economy from 46.3mpg, the extra friction and weight of 4WD sees this dip to 43.7mpg. The AWD auto is also around £4,000 more expensive. 

• Range Rover Evoque D200 diesel: The more powerful 200PS D200 diesel only comes with four driven wheels. It does 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds and averages a still-reasonable 43.2mpg. But despite emitting around 30g/km less CO2 than the petrol, it still drops into the steepest 37 percent BIK band. 

The Range Rover Evoque engine line-up has remained broadly the same throughout its lifetime, with fizzy turbo petrols offered alongside more fuel-efficient diesels. Nearly every Evoque you’ll find on the used car market will be an automatic: manual transmissions are very rare and less desirable than the auto. 

Range Rover Evoque features as standard & optional extras

Land Rover keeps the trim line-up refreshingly straightforward for the Range Rover Evoque. Buyers can choose from core S, SE and HSE variants, which are all available in regular-look or with sportier R-Dynamic style packs. 

You’ll spot the R-Dynamic at a glance from its copper-coloured bodywork details and styling strakes in the front bumper, plus the more assertive-looking skid plates front and rear. The R-Dynamic exterior pack includes stylish inserts in the bonnet itself. 

All models get alloy wheels (they start at 17 inches on the base car, with the Evoque S offering 18-inch wheels). All but base versions get leather seats as well; the standard car has manual-adjust fabric seats, although they are heated. A 10.0-inch Pivi touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity is standard, but all cars apart from the base model upgrade to the Pivi Pro system with connected sat-nav. 

The range-topping Evoque is the Autobiography, with a series of exclusive trim and styling features. Meanwhile, the high-performance P300 engine comes in a unique HST variant, with a more focused appearance to reflect its additional power.
