The Ford Ranger is the most popular double-cab pickup in the UK. A long-running model, those keen to buy or lease a good-looking, reliable and easy-to-maintain truck should certainly have the Ranger on their shortlist. 

Sold by Ford commercial vehicle dealers, the Ranger is available in several different body styles, including Single Cab and Super Cab. However, the Double Cab is the most popular, with four doors and an accommodating rear bench seat. All versions boast plenty of road presence, measuring 5.3 metres long, two metres wide and 1.8 metres tall. 

The Ford Ranger has built its dominant position in the new and used car market over several generations. The original model first went on sale in the late 1990s, and developed during the 2000s. But it was the arrival of an all-new Ranger in 2011 that really put this truck on the map. 

It was designed by Ford’s Australian division to be as tough as they come, yet also boasted newfound levels of performance and sophistication. Impressively, it even became the first double-cab pickup to earn a full five-star Euro NCAP crash-safety score. 

The latest version is the facelifted Ranger, launched in 2015. It offers a broad range of abilities for those looking to buy or lease a practical pickup. So comprehensive is the standard spec, it has never been better value for money. 

Ford Ranger models, trims, specs, engine sizes and more

The difference between Single Cab, Super Cab and Double Cab models is the division of space between passengers and load. The Single Cab has the biggest load bay, measuring 2.3 metres long. The Super Cab offers 1.8 metres and the Double Cab measures 1.6 metres. The latter has the most space for passengers, though. 

Reflecting the Ranger’s popularity with all types of buyers, there are numerous different trim levels, some with a very high level of equipment. All share the same core 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, though. This is a working vehicle at heart, so Ford doesn't offer a petrol alternative. 

The next-generation Ranger is expected to offer a pure electric model alongside regular diesel-powered versions.

• Ford Ranger 2.0L Ecoblue 130 diesel: The entry-level Ford Ranger uses a 130PS version of the Ecoblue engine, in combination with a six-speed manual gearbox. It reaches 62mph in a reasonable 11.1 seconds, and average fuel economy of up to 40.9mpg is pretty impressive, given how four-wheel drive is standard. 

• Ford Ranger 2.0L Ecoblue 170 diesel: The 170PS version of the same engine isn’t any faster in terms of acceleration, but the extra power is likely to make it a more relaxed motorway cruiser. It too averages up to 40.9mpg, and is available with a 10-speed automatic gearbox alongside the standard manual. 

• Ford Ranger 2.0L Ecoblue 213 diesel: The most powerful Ford Ranger engine to buy or lease offers a punchy 213PS, for 0-62mph in 9.0 seconds. The standard 10-speed automatic gearbox makes it easy to drive, while the extra power doesn’t come at the expense of decent fuel economy. The official average is 36.7mpg. 

Ford has stuck to the tried-and-tested 2.0-ltire diesel for some time now, so it will dominate the used-car market for newer Rangers. Older models offered a beefy 3.2-litre diesel, which has similar pulling power to the current motor but isn’t as refined or fuel-efficient. 

Ford Ranger features as standard & optional extras

Although entry-level Ford Rangers are billed as pure working vehicles, they still have comfort features such as electric windows and air conditioning as standard. Don’t expect alloy wheels, though: they’re hardly essential when you’re delivering a load to the local building site. 

Stepping up to the Ranger XLT brings the all-important alloys, plus a fancier chrome grille, front fog lights and a smart leather steering wheel.

A more luxurious version is the Ranger Limited. This has bright bi-xenon headlights, rear privacy glass and a cool chrome tubular sports bar. More notably, it has leather upholstery inside, plus an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Ford Sync 3, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The rear parking camera is very useful, too. 

A version that’s been popular for years is the Ranger Wildtrak. This stylish spec comes with 18-inch wheels, a titanium-effect grille and body styling, a bold aerodynamic sports hoop and plenty of Wildtrak logos outside and in. 

Finally, the high-performance range-topper is the Ranger Raptor. It has a wider track, flared wheelarches and rally raid-style Fox Pro dampers. It’s a very cool and capable machine indeed. 

All Ford Rangers have a broad array of custom-built optional extras, from rear deck load covers to tough body protection for shrugging off knocks and scrapes. They can be bought from Ford itself, or via a huge number of aftermarket specialists.
