More information, a brief history and our verdict on the Audi TT

The Audi TT is one of the most iconic cars ever produced by the famous German brand. A genuine clean-sheet design, it caused a stir from the moment it was launched back in the 1990s, and continues to be a style icon today. However, it faces strong competition from exotic rivals such as the Alpine A110, BMW Z4 and Porsche 718 Cayman and Boxster.

The TT is offered either as a four-seat Coupe or two-seat Roadster. The engine line-up is concentrated on turbocharged petrol motors, with the two core choices joined by two powerful range-toppers (the TTS and TT RS), befitting the car’s upmarket status. All share ultra-strong aluminium-intensive construction to help save weight and improve agility.

That original TT first went on sale back in 1998. It was a jaw-dropping example of a concept car that was faithfully transferred into production car with almost no compromises. It helped transform the Audi brand into the sophisticated powerhouse of today.

The second-generation Audi TT arrived in 2006. The styling wasn’t quite as pure as its predecessor, but it had a much more sophisticated interior, and it was a more polished car to drive, too. This allowed Audi to launch ever more powerful versions (including a diesel-engined TT), culminating in the 340PS TT RS flagship.

Audi introduced the current TT range in 2014. More well-rounded than ever, one of the standouts was its digital-first interior, with an electronic instrument display that includes full-width mapping. The low-slung driving position feels exciting and Audi’s exceptionally high standards of build quality make it feel every inch the premium machine.  While it has four seats, the rear chairs are only really suitable for toddlers. It’s best to fold them flat, turning a surprisingly accommodating 305-litre boot into a very useful 715-litre load space. This bolsters the Audi TT’s everyday usability, which is aided furtherby punchy, easygoing engines and S tronic automatic gearboxes across the board.

Audi TT models, trims, specs, engine sizes and more

These days, Audi concentrates on turbocharged petrol-engined TTs. The low-CO2 TDI diesels that were once offered have now been discontinued. There aren’t any hybrid or plug-in hybrid options either – so it’s a good job the petrol engines are decently fuel-efficient.  A comprehensive range of trim levels focus on the sportier aspects of the TT. The range opens with a Sport grade, which gets stylish alloy wheels and sports seats inside. A Sport Edition steps up the exterior styling features for a still-accessible price tag.  S line is a very popular Audi TT trim grade. It includes lowered sports suspension, larger alloy wheels and enhanced ‘extra-sport’ seats with bespoke S line Alcantara and leather trim. Black Edition builds further on this, with forged alloy wheels and black chrome tail pipes.  If you want an Audi TT that has it all, choose the Vorsprung version. This has nearly every item of optional equipment fitted as standard. It’s the most indulgent TT you can buy. Here are the engine options available on the 2022 Audi TT.

  • Audi TT 40 TFSI S tronic petrol: The 200PS 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine gives a good level of performance even in the entry-level TT. Driving the front wheels via a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic gearbox, the sprint to 62mph takes 6.6 seconds. However, it’s still able to average an eye-opening 42.2mpg – exceptional fuel economy for such a swift car.
  • Audi TT 45 TFSI quattro S tronic petrol: The 45 TFSI uses the same 2.0-litre turbo engine, but with a power boost to 245PS. It also adds quattro four-wheel drive, and the combination serves up 0-62mph in 5.1 seconds. It returns nearly 37mpg in the official test, despite the extra power and traction.
  • Audi TTS quattro S tronic petrol: The ultimate four-cylinder Audi TT, the TTS has 320PS for 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds. An average of 34mpg still isn’t bad, either.
  • Audi TT RS quattro S tronic petrol: The exciting TT RS has a 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine producing a full-fat 400PS. Zero to 62mph takes just 3.7 seconds, although you will have to swallow fuel economy of less than 32mpg.
As mentioned, efficient diesel-engined examples of the Audi TT are available on the second-hand market. They also come with quattro all-wheel drive too, so are surprisingly useful daily-driver cars, particularly if you choose an S tronic automatic. Apart from the first-generation 3.2-litre V6 version, there has never been a TT without a turbocharged engine.

Audi TT features as standard & optional extras

The Audi TT comes with a good level of standard equipment even as standard. Xenon headlights with LED running lights are included, along with 18-inch alloy wheels and electric folding door mirrors. Rear parking sensors protect you during manoeuvres, while an anti-theft alarm protects your TT from others.

Every current TT also features the vibrant 12.3-inch Audi Virtual Cockpit instrument display, which includes sat-nav. Alcantara and leather upholstery is another standard luxury, while moving up to the Audi TT Sport Edition brings larger 19-inch alloys and a cool black exterior styling pack.

Most TT enthusiasts aim for the popular S line version. This comes with standard features such as lowered S line Sport suspension and S line body styling, LED headlights, even more hip-hugging front Super Sport seats and a black headlining inside.

You can add a series of cool styling options by choosing the Black Edition. This features 20-inch Audi Sport forged alloy wheels, black chrome tailpipes, rear privacy glass and matt brushed aluminium interior inlays.
Meanwhile, many of the pricier options available to TT buyers, such as Matrix LED headlights, auto-dim exterior mirrors, Nappa leather upholstery, a B&O audio system and Audi MMI Navigation Plus, are included as standard in the top-spec Vorsprung edition.

Needless to say, both the Audi TTS and TT RS have upgraded sport suspension and drivetrains, for the ultimate in track-going potency.

The Audi TT’s exterior dimensions are:

  • Length: 4,191mm
  • Width: 1,832mm
  • Height: 1,353mm
  • Ground clearance: 107mm
